After obtaining his B.A. magna cum laude in sociology from the State University of New York–Buffalo, Mr. Steyer went on to earn his Juris Doctorate from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1981. Describing his motivations for pursuing a career in the law, he noted his desire to pursue a field of work which would keep him on his toes:
I figured I could make a better living as an attorney than as a school teacher, but I could still be intellectually challenged.
Since its founding in 1993, Steyer Lowenthal Boodrookas Alvarez & Smith LLP has become renowned among Bay Area attorneys, judiciary, and clients alike for its high degree of professionalism and exceptional track record. Combining white-glove service offered in an economical manner with strategic, experienced litigation skills, Mr. Steyer and his team of attorneys demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to their clients.
It is Mr. Steyer’s willingness to go above and beyond for his clients combined with his wealth of experience which sets him apart from his peers in antitrust law. To date, he has litigated more than fifty complex litigation matters and has been co-lead counsel or played a prominent role in various class and representative cases, including a case which settled for $1.1 billion on the eve of the trial, the largest ever indirect purchaser case settlement. Mr. Steyer has also successfully defended numerous clients, including recently having represented USS-POSCO Industries in an alleged market allocation antitrust case, in which the district court granted summary judgment to the defendants and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the ruling.
As a thought-leader in his field, Mr. Steyer is a member of numerous professional organizations and has contributed to many articles and publications. He has also shared his experience with his peers at a number of state and nation bar engagements and seminars, presenting on topics including unfair competition claims, advanced business litigation, and punitive damages, among others.
Not one to be deterred by changing tides, Mr. Steyer intends to continue pushing his practice forward for the benefit of his clients. He is currently working alongside three other firms to represent plaintiffs in an antitrust case against Sutter Health and is also defending a start-up beverage company in a commercial dispute. Looking to the future, Mr. Steyer intends to offer his clients the award-winning service for which he has become known for many years to come.
