Mr. Alpert is AV® Preeminent™ rated by Martindale-Hubbell® and has been recognized by both Maryland and Washington, D.C., Super Lawyers®.

A natural orator, becoming an attorney always seemed like the perfect fit for Mr. Alpert. As he tells it, it wasn’t until he was in law school at George Washington University that he developed an interest in criminal defense:

In law school, I was very active in moot court, and I loved it. I ended up doing a clerkship with a judge and then joining the prosecutors’ office. So when I went into private practice, I had the skills and experience to jump right into defense work. <<This quote was adapted from your interview. Can you confirm that it captures the spirit of what you said? Would you like to elaborate?>>

After graduating with his Juris Doctor in 1989, Mr. Alpert worked as a prosecutor in the Charles County and then Prince George’s County Maryland State’s Attorney Offices. In these roles, he became familiar with the skills, strategies, and processes involved in prosecuting a wide range of cases, including misdemeanors, juvenile cases, major felonies, and aggravated assault, including violent crime and armed robbery. At his second position with the Prince George’s County office, Mr. Alpert oversaw all Drug Enforcement Administration and Southern Maryland Narcotics Task Force prosecutions.

In 1995, Mr. Alpert joined Smith, Somerville, & Chase, LLC, where he worked as a civil litigator for over a year before striking out on his own. He has been in private practice ever since, using the experience and insight he gained as a prosecutor to successfully defend clients accused of crimes and DUI, as well as to advocate on behalf of his clients who have been injured at no fault of their own. For his steadfast commitment to client satisfaction and his tireless dedication to success in each case he undertakes, Mr. Alpert maintains a 10.0/10.0 “Superb” rating from Avvo and has been listed as a Top 100 Trial Lawyer by the National Trial Lawyers Association.

Today, Mr. Alpert is renowned not only for his aggressive litigation skills and experience on both sides of the courtroom but also because of his commitment to furthering his education. He regularly attends the National College for DUI Defense, where he has received advanced training in DUI/DWI law, and he is one of only a few Maryland attorneys certified as an NHTSA Standardized Field Test Sobriety Instructor. Additionally, he frequently gives lectures for other attorneys and police agencies on the intricacies of DUI litigation.

In order to serve his clients to the best of his ability in an ever-evolving field, Mr. Alpert is highly involved in the legal community as a member of numerous prestigious organizations, including the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the National Trial Lawyers. He is also a founding member of the DUI Defense Lawyers Association and sits on the board of directors for the Maryland Criminal Defense Attorneys’ Association.

This position of prominence gives Mr. Alpert a unique vantage point on local and national trends in the law. In particular, he is paying close attention to ongoing advocacy efforts to lower the legal limit for a driver's blood alcohol content. He notes:

There’s is a major push from the National Highway Safety Administration to establish .05 as the legal blood alcohol content allowable for drivers. I think that will create a problem of people being arrested on very specious evidence. This could create numerous civil rights violations, and it raises important questions about what counts as being impaired.

After three decades dedicated to law, Mr. Alpert has no plans of slowing down. Looking forward, he hopes to continue expanding his practice and providing the unsurpassed level of client service for which he has become so well-known. When he isn’t working, Mr. Alpert is an avid runner and skier.
