Based in Albany, New York, Andrew H. Wood has over a decade of experience helping families and individuals resolve their matrimonial and family law issues with consideration and compassion. Mr. Wood is a co-founder of the law firm of O’Brien & Wood PLLC, where he and his fellow and longtime friend Attorney Kevin O’Brien have been recognized among New York’s Top Rated Local® Law Partners.
Mr. Wood grew up in the small rural town of Walton, New York, in a family filled with attorneys, including his father. Inspired to follow in their footsteps, he ultimately decided upon pursuing a career in family law because of his desire to help people:
I love the idea of working with people, helping people. In family law, you get to have close relationships with your clients and you can really make a difference in their lives. You get to use common sense and approach different situations with compassion and creativity.
Mr. Wood earned his law degree from Albany Law School in 2005 where he received recognition for his excellence in Land Use Planning. After graduating, he began his career with a law firm that specialized in the prosecution and defense of personal injury actions. Mr. Wood went on to represent the City of Albany on a variety of municipal law issues and eventually accepted a position with the city’s Corporation Counsel’s Office. While working for the City of Albany, he refined his civil litigation skills and regularly appeared in State and Federal Courts on matters involving personal injury, civil rights violations, real property tax disputes, and contract disputes.
In October 2011, Mr. Wood joined the law firm of Friedman and Molinsek, P.C., where he cut his teeth in family law on a broad range of issues, including prosecution and defense of divorce/matrimonial actions, family court issues. He went on to with Stephen L. Molinsek, LLC, where he practiced until 2016 when he co-founded O’Brien & Wood, PLLC, which now offers representation in matrimonial and family law as well as criminal matters.
Today, Attorneys Wood and O’Brien are known for their in-depth knowledge of family law issues, formidable litigation skills, and their commitment to helping clients achieve their goals. They strive to help clients understand the process that they are facing and explain the issues involved in their case while allaying any fears of going to court.
Now widely regarded as a leader in family law, Mr. Wood stays at the forefront of developing trends in the field. In particular, he has been paying close attention to the impact of the recently passed tax law on his clients:
The new Trump tax law has a big impact on maintenance, which used to be called alimony. It used to be tax deductible for the person paying it, but that will no longer be the case in 2018 and moving forward.
As his nascent law firm continues to grow, Mr. Wood envisions a bright future ahead. Looking forward, he intends to bring on more associate attorneys to help represent the firm’s rapidly enlarging clientele.
