Barry K. Rothman is a distinguished entertainment attorney based in Los Angeles, California. With over forty-five years of experience, Mr. Rothman runs a long-standing L.A. entertainment and business law firm where he offers a global practice for the benefit of individual and corporate clients in matters relating to business consultation and litigation, contract disputes, and entertainment negotiation and litigation for talent and large industry companies. Widely recognized as a leader in entertainment law, Mr. Rothman has represented numerous high-profile clients throughout his career, including Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones, Ozzy Osbourne, Little Richard, Zsa Zsa Gabor, and Tony Curtis.
As he tells it, Mr. Rothman gravitated toward a career in the legal field because he saw it as an opportunity for creative expression:
It gives you the ability to think creatively and to see both sides of the issue. It gives you the ability to hopefully persuade somebody, whether it be a judge or a jury, that your position is meritorious, and that it should prevail.
After receiving his Bachelor of Business Administration in 1965 from UCLA, Mr. Rothman went on to study at Southwestern University School of Law where he earned his Juris Doctor in 1970, ready to take on the world of California entertainment and business law. In the nearly half-century since, Mr. Rothman has been serving the legal needs of entertainers and businesses throughout Los Angeles County and the greater state of California, concentrating his business in the areas of Hollywood, San Francisco, and Beverly Hills.
With decades of collective experience across the broad spectrum of entertainment law—from contract negotiations and high-value transactions to litigation at all levels of the court system—Mr. Rothman has represented a large roster of renowned clients, including Warner Brothers Records, with whom he worked as corporate counsel for five years. Mr. Rothman and his team prioritize identifying client goals and developing the most effective strategic approach to accomplishing them. This emphasis on client service has earned Mr. Rothman a reputation as one of the go-to entertainment attorneys in Los Angeles as well as numerous awards and recognitions. Among many other honors, he received the Business Financing Award in 2014, the Client Satisfaction Award in 2016, and was selected as a Top Lawyer in California in 2013.
Having worked in entertainment law for nearly five decades, Mr. Rothman understands the importance of keeping his finger on the pulse of prevailing trends and developments within the field to guarantee the highest quality representation for his clients. Recently, he has noticed the growth of technology and the digital platform has greatly affected the industry. He noted:
The model for entertainment compensation has changed dramatically because there's no hard inventory anymore. Everything is digital downloads on the Internet, rather than going in and buying something that embodies intellectual property. So it's our job to make sure that the creators of this property are protected, and that they receive their compensation for what they do and what they create. That has been the challenge of the past decade and will continue to be the challenge for the future.
Moving forward, Mr. Rothman is fully confident that he and his team will rise to this challenge and maintain industry-leading representation for his valued clients. In the coming years, he intends to continue adding highly-skilled legal professionals to his team while cultivating a more selective process for accepting clients and cases.
