Betsy McDowell is a distinguished REALTOR® based in Atlanta, Georgia. With twelve years of experience, McDowell has proven herself a foremost expert in her region’s residential and commercial real estate market. She currently owns and manages The McDowell Group of Keller Williams Atlanta Perimeter where she focuses on luxury-sector listings for both buyers and sellers.
Betsy’s entry into the real estate world was a fortuitous one. After obtaining her pilot’s license while completing her studies in aviation management and business administration at Auburn University, she worked at Delta Air Lines for nearly a decade. When the time came to buy a home, her Realtor suggested that she would enjoy working in the industry and, as she tells it, the rest is history:
When I was looking for my own home, my trusted friend and Realtor said he thought I might love this business and that I should talk to someone. He took me to talk to a broker friend who is still one of my mentors, today. She asked me if I was tough, because to be in this business you have to be tough. I remember those words like it was yesterday and I have quoted them many times.
With her business savvy and resourcefulness, McDowell quickly bridged the gap between the world of aviation and real estate. Now leading The McDowell Group of Keller Williams Atlanta Perimeter, McDowell oversees all operations from negotiating contracts to making sales calls. Though her primary focus is on the luxury residential market, she notes that she is also becoming well-versed in commercial property:
Since many of my clients have commercial needs in addition to residential needs, we can bridge the gap between the two using our KW commercial resources, which are some of the best in the industry.
With a people-oriented philosophy based on her motto “to serve and not be served”, Betsy has attracted an equally robust and loyal clientele. Beyond her industry-leading service, she shows her commitment to building enduring relationships by way of large-scale client appreciation events and small tokens of her gratitude such as complimentary sports tickets. Such a display of gratitude has played no small part in her receiving much of her business through referrals. Guided by her client’s best interests, she also has no problem referring customers to other agents if she is unable to provide them with a unique service that they need.
What sets Betsy apart from others in her field is her naturally enterprising attitude coupled with her tireless devotion to her education. She recently took classes in drone photography and is looking forward to soon earning her stager’s license. Betsy has also been a prominent teacher throughout her career and has taught at both her former company, Delta, and her current company, Keller Williams. From this unique vantage point, McDowell is able to keep her finger on the pulse of prevailing trends in Atlanta’s real estate market. She noted:
Right now, it's boom town in Atlanta, and I tell people all the time that they may not recognize things from one day to the next. The landscape changes so quickly. In real estate, you have to keep up with the market daily, weekly, and monthly. One day a building or house will be there, and the next day it's gone, and a new one starts to go up.
When McDowell is not helping others realize their real estate dreams, she is busy giving back to her community. She is actively involved in a number of nonprofit groups, fundraisers, and charities and believes in giving back. She is also actively involved with her church, her children’s school (raising money for them and coaching her son's 3rd-grade basketball team), as well as many different fundraisers, charities, and community groups, such as the Maritime Foundation at Lake Lanier where she helps children foster a love of boating and sailing. Though she loves her job in real estate, in many ways she considers herself a philanthropist first.
After over a decade dedicated to real estate, McDowell envisions a bright future ahead. In the coming year, she is slated to be featured in both O Magazine and Entrepreneur Magazine's forthcoming "Women Leaders in Business" issue. Looking forward, she aims to use her background in the corporate world to help mentor the future generation of agents and also hopes to expand her company's vision to other states.
