Edward “Eddie” Montoya is a respected attorney specializing in personal injury, wrongful death, and aviation disaster lawsuits. With twenty-five years of experience, the Miami-based founder of Montoya Law, P.A., has been widely recognized for his unmatched litigation skill and dedication to justice. Mr. Montoya is AV® Preeminent™ rated by Martindale-Hubbell® and has been recognized among the Top 100 Trial Lawyers by the National Trial Lawyers Association.
Mr. Montoya developed an interest in the practice of law as a child. As he tells it:
My mother was a paralegal when I was a kid, and I was fascinated with criminal cases. I read every book about lawyers, watched every movie about lawyers. I had a passion for treating people justly and equally—I never liked when big kids would pick on little kids; I felt like I had to advocate for the underdog. My career evolved very naturally out of that initial interest.
After majoring in economics and minoring in political science in college, Mr. Montoya was accepted to Vermont Law School, where he graduated with his Juris Doctorate in 1992. Shortly after graduation, he relocated to the Miami area, where he immediately began working with Montero Finizio Velasquez Weissing & Reyes, P.A., spending several years gaining valuable and diverse experience in disaster litigation and personal injury claims. In 1999, Mr. Montoya struck out on his own and founded Montoya Law, which today is a nationally regarded personal injury firm.
With a niche specialization in aviation disasters, Mr. Montoya also represents victims, and families of victims, of product liability disasters, wrongful death, and complex injury cases. For his eminent litigation skills, his tireless client advocacy, and his seamless navigation of complex legal issues, Mr. Montoya maintains a “Superb” rating on Avvo, and has been recognized among the Top 100 Lawyers for Florida by the American Society of Legal Advocates as well as a Top Lawyer in Florida by the Legal Network. He was recently elected as the Director of the Miami Dade Trial Lawyers Association.
A clear leader in his field, Mr. Montoya keeps a careful eye fixed on trends and changes in his areas of specialty. Currently, he is paying attention to the impact he expects the development of automated vehicles to have on personal injury law:
Hopefully, automation of vehicles will cut down on the number of accidents and wrongful death incidents by negligent drivers. That area of the law will change a lot. Laws will also have to change to protect consumers as automated vehicles become more ubiquitous—when it’s no longer an issue of negligent driving, it becomes a product liability issue. So I’m paying very close attention to that as it develops.
More than two-and-a-half-decades into his legal career, the pursuit of justice is still a passion project for Mr. Montoya, who represents each client with the same dedication to defending the underdog he wielded as a child. Looking to the future, Mr. Montoya intends to continue providing all of his clients with the skillful representation for which he has become known while expanding his aviation disaster practice.
