Flavio Van Boekel is a distinguished trial attorney with a wealth of diverse legal experience. Based in East Hanover, New Jersey, Mr. Van Boekel is the owner and founder of Van Boekel Law Firm, LLC, where he focuses his practice on Family Law, Divorce Law, Immigration Law, and Criminal Law. Widely respected for both his formidable litigation skills and his superior client service, he has twice been named to the National Trial Lawyers Association list of “Top 100 Lawyers” and the Super Lawyers® list of “Rising Stars,” an honor bestowed upon just 2.5 percent of all attorneys in New Jersey.
As he tells it, Mr. Van Boekel was inspired to pursue a career in law by his time spent serving in the Armed Forces
My mother was a paralegal so I always had some curiosity about law. But It wasn't until serving in the military that I decided to make a career in it. After leaving the service, I wanted to continue making a difference in people's lives and I believe law is important because it can change people's lives for the better and you can make significant contributions to society acting as a lawyer.
Following in his mother's footsteps, Mr. Van Boekel began his law career as a paralegal, a role he served in for over a decade. Wanting to expand his practice, he enrolled at Michigan State College of Law where he earned his Juris Doctor, cum laude, in 2009. While in law school, Mr. Van Boekel clerked for the then Governor of Michigan Jennifer Granholm as well as interned for the Attorney Grievance Commission, which was responsible for the ethics of attorneys and disciplinary intakes.
Now leading his own law firm, Mr. Van Boekel’s practice primarily focuses on helping clients all across New Jersey with a broad range of family law and immigration matters. Dealing with areas of the law that are complex and often emotionally difficult, he takes extra care to treat each client with the utmost compassion while helping them to navigate the nuances of the legal system. He is also fluent in both Spanish and Portuguese, while his law firm’s other members speak languages such as Russian and Latvian, enabling them to represent a diverse clientele.
In addition to his committed representation, Mr. Van Boekel also has a reputation as a fierce and effective litigator who is willing to fight on behalf of his clients both inside and outside the courtroom. Over the course of his career, he has handled numerous divorce trials, domestic violence restraining orders trials, and countless family law motions including those to enforce marital settlement agreements, motions to increase or decrease child support, as well as child custody battles. As an immigration attorney, he has extensive experience in matters ranging from H-2 employment visas and deportation defense to citizenship and green card applications.
As a leader in his field. Mr. Van Boekel keeps his finger on the pulse of prevailing trends in his areas of practice. In particular, he has been paying close attention to the effects of the New Jersey Alimony Reform Act which was signed into law by Governor Chris Christie in 2014. He noted:
I am a pro-woman lawyer, and this law has changed several things that have had a negative impact on women's ability to receive alimony. Though it changed the age of emancipation from eighteen to nineteen, it has also abolished permanent alimony in the state.
After nearly twenty years dedicated to the law as both an attorney and paralegal, Mr. Van Boekel envisions a bright future ahead. In the near term, he intends to hire a new associate attorney who he looks forward to grooming to hopefully one day become a junior partner with his firm. Outside of his law practice, Mr. Van Boekel is an avid chess player, a movie enthusiast, and a dedicated history buff.
