Frederic M. Shulman is a distinguished lawyer based in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey. With over thirty-five years of experience, Mr. Shulman is a leading attorney in commercial law. He is a principal attorney at the law firm Price, Meese, Shulman & D’Arminio, P.C. where his practice encompasses the areas of commercial law and litigation, real estate law, corporate transactions, insurance defense, and employment claims.
For Rick, finding his way into a career in law was very much a surprise, albeit one that made sense in hindsight. After earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Yeshiva University, he enrolled in a four-year joint J.D./MBA program at Columbia University in New York City. He explains:
The first year was a hundred percent law course and I discovered that I liked the intellectual rigor of law school. I ended up dropping the MBA program and just staying in law. There was no way I knew that I wanted to be a lawyer when I was young, though. No idea. I just kind of fell into it. I enjoyed the law school experience, and decided to concentrate my professional life there.
After earning his J.D. from Columbia University in 1979, Mr. Shulman went on to practice law in New York City, concentrating on commercial and tort litigation matters. In 1994, he co-founded the law firm Price, Meese, Shulman & D’Arminio, P.C. and soon thereafter expanded his practice into the areas of corporate, real estate, and small business representation.
At his firm, Mr. Shulman concentrates on business matters of various types, including dispute resolutions, purchases and sales of businesses, commercial real estate and personal property leasing and licensing, real estate, employment, and contractual matters. He principally represents individuals and companies in the service industry in New York and New Jersey, acting on behalf of those companies in their corporate, commercial, real estate and banking relationships. His target market is in small to midsize businesses, focusing on commercial, transactional real estate, banking and employment counseling, and their associated litigation matters.
With expertise in a broad range of areas within the law, Mr. Shulman distinguishes himself from his peers and colleagues through his attention to detail and the personalized representation he provides to each client. He prides himself on accessibility and responsiveness, making himself readily available to his clients and understanding the importance of robust, transparent communication.
As a leader in his field, Mr. Shulman keeps his finger on the pulse of prevailing trends in the industries relevant to his work. In particular, he has been paying close attention to the increasing number of independent contractors with the rise of the so-called 'gig economy'. He noted:
On the employment side there is a fair amount of law being made concerning independent contractors versus employees and the application of minimum wage, hours, tax withholdings, etc. That’s everything from Uber drivers to cocktail waitresses in that the companies are always trying to set them up as independent contractors so they don’t have to pay the employment FICA or worry about minimum wage and overtime. There’s a fair amount of law coming out on the employment side that I follow.
With over three decades of experience, Rick has no intention of slowing down. Looking to the future, he hopes to broaden the scope of disciplines that his firm addresses for current and prospective clients, and to continuing expanding his firm.
