With more than thirty-five years of experience, Gerald Clausen is a Certified Appellate Law Specialist based in San Francisco. He is the owner of the Law Office of Gerald Clausen where he practices plaintiff’s appeal law with a niche in public entity tort liability and sports injury cases. For his industry expertise, Mr. Clausen has been recognized by Martindale-Hubbell® as an AV® Preeminent™ Rated attorney, among other prestigious accolades.
Today an eminent appellate attorney, Mr. Clausen describes why he decided to focus exclusively on appellate law:
Unlike many attorneys, I really enjoy the research and writing aspect of the law, which is a huge part of appellate representation. I find it extremely fascinating and more of a cerebral endeavor.
After earning his Bachelor and Master of Arts in psychology, Mr. Clausen pursued his Juris Doctor at Hastings College of the Law. He graduated in 1981 and began his career as a personal injury trial lawyer, trying several cases to verdict. Thirteen years later, Mr. Clausen opened his boutique appellate law firm.
At the Law Office of Gerald Clausen, Mr. Clausen provides both conventional appellate services and comprehensive trial consultation services, assisting litigators in the development of legal theories and strategies in complex cases. From personal injury to employment law, he offers clients creative and analytical representation that is firmly rooted in the facts and law. Mr. Clausen’s notable achievements, including Charas v. Trans World Airlines, has earned him selection to Northern California Super Lawyers® each year since its inception in 2004.
A thought leader in his field, Mr. Clausen frequently speaks and writes on appellate and trial procedure, as well as on developing trends in substantive law. Commenting on one trend that is currently capturing his attention, he notes:
Over the tenure of my career, sub doctrines and other component of the law have become much more muscular and developed. This has made legal questions for research and writing—which are part and parcel of appellate law—far more complex than they were a few decades ago, even in relatively simple areas of the law.
An active constituent of his legal community, Mr. Clausen is a member of the appellate section of the State Bar of California. He is also involved with the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association and the Lawyers’ Club of San Francisco Inns of Court.
