Jaime Topham is a preeminent family law attorney based in Grantsville, Utah. Since earning her law degree from the University of Utah in 2007, Ms. Topham has established herself as a compassionate and effective representative for families in the Tooele and Salt Lake County areas in matters ranging from divorce and adoptions to custody and paternity cases. The founder of Topham Family Law, she was recently named among the Top 10 Under 40 Attorneys in the State of Utah by the National Academy of Family Law Attorneys and as one of the 10 Best Attorneys in the State of Utah by the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys.
Looking back, Ms. Topham credits her father, Gary Buhler for inspiring her to become a lawyer. As she tells it:
My father was a family law attorney, and I wanted to go into law because of him. When I got out of school, however, I didn’t want to go into family law because I grew up in the middle of it. But as time passed, I recognized that there is a significant need out here where we live for a good family law attorney that cares about their clients, pays attention to their interests, and represents them to the best of their ability. I wanted to fill that need.
Motivated by her father’s example, Ms. Topham is an attorney who is passionate about helping parents reclaim their lives and reduce uncertainty for their children as they move through the divorce process and other challenging family law scenarios. It is particularly important to the firm that children be treated with respect and dignity as their parents work through the struggles of restructuring their lives.
In order to facilitate the best possible outcome for the children involved in her cases, Ms. Topham pays close attention to trends regarding how courts handle child custody. She notes:
It used to be that 90 percent of the time mom would be the first pick to take custody of the children, but that’s changing in Utah. The courts recognize that both parents often have good resources to provide for the children and that it’s important for both to be a part of their lives. That’s why courts are trying to encourage parents to have mutual custody, and they’re certainly trying to help people succeed in co-parenting.
Ms. Topham complements her extensive experience in family law with a compassionate touch, providing her clients with a comfortable environment in which to approach the stress of tackling the emotional challenges of a case. Based in Pegasus Event Center, an equine boarding and show facility that she runs with her husband Evan, Topham Family Law has a hometown feel. As a small firm located on a farm, it’s not uncommon to see cats, dogs, horses, and the occasional turkey, wandering around the premises. Jaime herself can often be found working with her four-legged constant companions, Zoey and Hannah, watching the horses go by in the arena just outside her office window. Having grown up on the back of a horse, Ms. Topham understands the calming effect that animals can have on people in emotionally trying times.
With her first full decade of practice behind her, Ms. Topham envisions a bright future ahead for her firm and her clients. Looking forward, her goal is to add at least ten attorneys within the next five years while expanding her firm’s brand and market share. She also plans to open additional offices in the Salt Lake area.
Outside of her legal career, Ms. Topham is an active member of her community. In January of 2016, Mayor Marshall of Grantsville City appointed her to be a commissioner on the Grantsville City Planning and Zoning Commission. Jaime spends the day operating her law firm and spends her evenings teaching horseback riding lessons. In her spare time, she manages horse shows in the local community and rescues dogs, horses, and everything in between. Her life revolves around helping others become the best that they can be.
