Jason Benjamin has been helping military and civilian families throughout Bellevue County, Washington, tackle their family law issues for over twenty years. One of Washington State’s preeminent trial lawyers and a leading authority on child custody law, Mr. Benjamin has handled over 1,000 child custody and support cases over the course of his career. Additionally, his practice encompasses matters involving divorce, separation, and relocation, among others.

A graduate of Seattle University School of Law, Mr. Benjamin has made a name for himself as a formidable litigator capable of taking on the most difficult cases. Today, he can be found in court almost every day of the week effectively arguing cases on behalf of his clients. As he tells it, Mr. Benjamin got his taste for the thrill of debating when he was in high school:

My high school debate coach was an attorney, and he always regaled us with stories about his practice. I was a born orator and enjoyed that type of debating and fiercely advocating for a position. So it was a natural progression for me to go on to law school.

Mr. Benjamin ultimately decided to focus on family law because it afforded him the opportunity to spend a lot of time in the courtroom while being able to help people in what is often the most stressful time in their lives. Practicing out of his office in Bellevue, he understands the challenging emotions involved with family law cases and puts his clients at ease both through his comfort inside a court of law and his compassionate, empathetic approach to representation.

When it comes to litigation, no case too complex or too extreme for Mr. Benjamin. He is known by colleagues and clients alike for his confidence and persuasive debate skills, and his trial experience is nothing short of prodigious. Many lawyers in the community are aware of his trial advocacy and often refer their clients to him for cases that are headed to court.

Though he takes on a broad range of family law cases, Mr. Benjamin particularly welcomes families who are experiencing emergency custody, domestic violence, or restraining order issues, and can typically obtain appropriate orders within hours to protect his clients and their children. From the beginning of his legal career, Mr. Benjamin has aggressively advocated on behalf of victims of domestic violence, even in a time when domestic violence was not taken as seriously by the courts as it is today.

As one of the most experienced attorneys in child custody law, Mr. Benjamin is deeply immersed in the most recent trends in the field. In particular, he notes that he has witnessed a significant shift in how courts approach child custody cases:

The court system is starting recognizing the diversity of the family structure. It’s not just focused on the husband, wife, and children anymore. Today, a family can be a grandmother and a grandson; a child might have more than two parents or same-sex parents. Courts are finally acknowledging those important familial relationships whereas ten years ago they didn't.

As the nature of families—and consequently family law—evolve with the times, Mr. Benjamin remains at the forefront of these changes and is poised to continue providing clients with industry-leading representation both inside and outside of the courtroom. Looking to the future, he anticipates rapid growth for his firm and intends to bring on several associate attorneys to help him with his expanding caseload.
