Dr. John D. McCann is a world-renowned cosmetic surgeon who has been blending art and science for twenty-one years. As the current medical director of the Center for Facial Appearances in Sandy, Utah, Dr. McCann provides expert Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery services to the communities of Salt Lake City and the surrounding areas. He is also the founder of Club Youthful Me, a long-term program for achieving and maintaining youthful facial appearances.
From a young age, Dr. McCann was interested in problem solving and science, which eventually led him to pursue a path in medicine. After he graduated from the University of Iowa in 1991 from a combined M.D./PhD program, completing a groundbreaking thesis that elucidated the molecular mechanism of Cystic Fibrosis. Deciding to specialize in ophthalmology, he went on to complete his residency at the University of California, San Francisco.
Looking back, he recalls his decision to enter the specialty of Oculoplastic Surgery:
I discovered that what most ophthalmologists do is the cataract and glaucoma surgery. Although I think that’s intriguing, I found it a little repetitive and so I wanted to go into something that had more variety in the kinds of problems that you take care of and that’s how I got involved in plastic surgery. It’s different than ophthalmology because every patient has a unique problem and you have to come up with a unique solution for it, and I found that it gave me a creative outlet.
After completing his residency, Dr. McCann went on to the University of Utah to receive advanced training in eyelid and facial plastic surgery. From there, he accepted a position as a full-time faculty member at UCLA and spent the next nine years heading his department at a UCLA affiliated hospital where he founded the school’s Aesthetic Center and co-directing their Orbital Disease Center.
Today, Dr. McCann specializes in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, concentrating on cosmetic surgery of the eyelids, midface, lower face, and forehead. He treats disorders that affect the eyelid, orbit, and tear drain system, caring for patients through both cosmetic surgery as well as non-surgical procedures such as Botox and fillers. Now the medical director at the Center For Facial Appearances, Dr. McCann performs both cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries as a private practitioner.
As a leader in his specialty, Dr. McCann keeps his finger on the pulse of prevailing trends in cosmetic surgery. In particular, he notes the decreasing number of private practices both in his field and across other specialties in medicine:
I think there has been a significant change in the way that more and more physicians are not working for themselves but becoming employees of hospitals or hospital systems. I like having more control over my own destiny, so I prefer the private practice way.
To stay involved in the community of ophthalmic surgeons, Dr. McCann is a frequent keynote speaker at conferences and seminars both nationally and worldwide. He leads international training programs, sharing his expertise in Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery and working with physicians from all over Europe, Asia, South America, and Brazil. In the coming year, he will be traveling to both Singapore and Australia to speak to physicians about his work in the field.
Beyond his practice, Dr. McCann is also a renowned innovator and has developed many cutting-edge medical devices throughout his career, including compressive goggles that are used to significantly reduce post-operative bruising. He is also the Developer, Founder, and CEO of McCann Medical Matrix, an electronic medical record software that is used by doctors all over the country.
Having performed over 25,000 procedures over the last two decades, Dr. McCann is a respected expert in the field of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. There is no limit to what he will achieve moving forward as his methods of balancing science and art continue to guide him throughout his career. When he’s not working, Dr. McCann enjoys spending time with his wife, Rachel, traveling, and staying active with outdoor activities like fishing and rafting.
