Kristin R. Barnhart is one of the Atlanta metropolitan area’s most successful family and entertainment law attorneys. Ms. Barnhart has been practicing with the Platt Law Firm Divorce in Roswell, Georgia, since 2013, and has been recognized among the Top 40 Under 40 by The National Advocates.
Looking back, Ms. Barnhart’s decision to go into law was a natural one:
I became a lawyer because I wanted to help people. I really enjoy family law, in particular, because it gives me the opportunity to work directly with individuals as opposed to corporations.
Ms. Barnhart has held fast to that mission ever since she stepped foot in the Charleston School of Law, where she was involved with the Crisis Ministries Homeless Justice Project. After receiving her Juris Doctor in 2012, she quickly became known for her commitment to being an effective advisor and advocate for all her clients, which earned her the Client Satisfaction Award from the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys in 2016.
Today, Ms. Barnhart’s practice with the Platt Law Firm encompasses a broad range of family and entertainment law matters. As a family law attorney, she brings a deep sensitivity to helping clients through what can often be some of the most trying times in their life, including the legal issues surrounding divorce, child custody and visitation, child support, alimony, and other domestic relations matters. Whenever possible, she strives to help parties resolve their issues through the mediation process to avoid the emotional stress of the courtroom. However, should a case need to go to court, she is a fierce litigator and is always willing to advocate for her clients’ interests in trial.
Ms. Barnhart’s entertainment practice focuses on providing innovative business and knowledgeable legal advice to individuals and companies in the entertainment industry with an emphasis on the representation of “celebrity” chefs and restaurateurs. Ms. Barnhart represents her clients in all facets of their careers, including brand development, contract negotiations, product endorsements, book publishing, media deals, copyright, trademark, and employment matters.
In addition to her work with the Platt Law Firm, Ms. Barnhart is actively involved with the legal community. She is a member attorney for Georgia Lawyers for the Arts, a nonprofit organization that provides legal assistance and educational programming to artists and arts organizations throughout Georgia. Ms. Barnhart is also a member of the Atlanta Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Georgia Association for Women Lawyers.
This prominence in her field gives Ms. Barnhart a unique vantage point from which to follow the latest trends in her areas of practice. Recently, she notes, she has been paying close attention to the tax bill passed by Congress:
The tax bill could potentially eliminate alimony payments as a tax deduction, which would greatly affect our clients.
With just over five years committed to law, Ms. Barnhart has a lot to show for her efforts. Looking to the future, she hopes to continue growing her practice and her work helping individuals with their legal needs.
Outside of her legal career, Ms. Barnhart is an avid traveler, runner, and outdoors person. “I’m also a big foodie,” she says. “I love to try new restaurants.” Ms. Barnhart was married last year and enjoys spending time with her husband and their four-month-old daughter.
