Larry K. Cantley is a distinguished physician based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. With nearly forty years of experience, Dr. Cantley is a leading expert in endocrinology with a special interest and emphasis on metabolic bone disease, bone densitometry, and thyroid diseases. He currently practices alongside a group of board-certified endocrinologists at Forsyth Endocrine Consultants, a department of Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center.
As he tells it, Dr. Cantley’s decision to pursue medicine was fueled by a deep fascination of how the human body works:
I always wanted to understand how the human body works but also to be able to help people in times of illness and to maintain good health when they have good health.
After earning his medical degree from West Virginia University School of Medicine in 1977, Dr. Cantley went on to complete his internship and residency at Charleston Area Medical Center at West Virginia University. He followed this with a fellowship in endocrinology at UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine where he received the National Research Service Award for an NIH fellowship training grant for his research project on the regulation of parathyroid function.
Since completing his fellowship in 1983, Dr. Cantley has spent his career providing quality care to patients from his community. At his practice today, the self-described practitioner of Wellness provides comprehensive consultation, diagnostic, treatment and management services for a broad range of endocrine diseases and hormone problems such as thyroid function, pituitary function, adrenal gland function, diabetes, and calcium regulation.
Beyond his practice with Forsyth Endocrine Consultants, Dr. Cantley contributes to the medical community through his research, writing, and teaching. To date, he has given numerous lectures and published over a dozen articles in peer-reviewed journals on topics ranging from Iatrogenic Cushing's Syndrome, diabetes, and coronary heart disease, to hyperparathyroidism, osteoporosis and cystic fibrosis. Dr. Cantley has also held many academic appointments over the course of his career and has received the Master Teacher Award from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine on eight separate occasions.
As a leader in his specialty, Dr. Cantley keeps a close eye on prevailing trends within endocrinology. In particular, he has been following new developments in calcium regulation and thyroid disorders. He noted:
I remain very much involved in disorders of calcium regulation and thyroid disorders. I continue to see challenging cases of both disorders and follow with great interest the ongoing new developments in research which apply to my practice and my patients
After nearly four decades dedicated to medicine, Dr. Cantley shows no signs of slowing down. Looking to the future, he plans to remain at the top of his field as he maintains his skills and continues his committed focus on keeping his community healthy.
