Michael E. Prangle is a distinguished lawyer based in Chicago, Illinois. Recognized by Super Lawyers Magazine as a leading attorney, Mr. Prangle has been successfully defending hospitals in medical malpractice cases for over twenty-seven years. As a partner with the law firm Hall, Prangle, & Schoonveld, LLC (HPS), he has tried more than forty medical malpractice cases to verdict.
As he tells it, Mr. Prangle’s father, an insurance provider who frequently worked with lawyers, played a big role in his decision to become an attorney. Mr. Prangle initially majored in accounting, with little interest in being a lawyer, but his father strongly encouraged him to go to law school:
My father wanted me to become an attorney, but I was hesitant. Our compromise was that I would go to law school but would also earn an MBA from the University of Illinois. I enrolled in a joint program and it turned out he was right, I really loved the legal side of the program. My first job was with a former client of my dad’s. I started there in 1990 and, despite my objection, they put me in medical malpractice and defense work. Of course, I loved it from the first day that I started.
After earning his Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Business Administration, Mr. Prangle enrolled at the University of Illinois for his joint MBA and JD program. Three years after taking his first job in 1990, he moved on to a new position at Lord, Bissell, & Brook, a firm specializing in hospital malpractice defense. He has been in medical malpractice defense ever since.
Today, Mr. Prangle’s practice ranges from the representation of doctors, nurses, and hospitals to the defense of other professionals, such as accountants, product manufacturers, long-term care facilities, and trucking companies. His particular areas of focus include general commercial liability, healthcare litigation, catastrophic trial teams, and birth trauma defense teams. With a philosophy of using the law as a sword instead of a shield to aggressively defend his clients, Mr. Prangle has successfully achieved case dismissals and pared down claims, reducing the exposure his clients faced. Some noteworthy achievements of his include successfully defending a case on an allegation of memory loss as a result of nurse negligence in Las Vegas, as well as a case involving an allegedly misplaced gastronomy tube.
As a leader in his field, Mr. Prangle keeps his eye on prevailing trends within medical malpractice law. He noted:
There is a lot of consolidation going on within the health field at the hospital level. So there's a lot of change going on where we normally would not have had a lot of change in the past.
After nearly three decades dedicated to law, Mr. Prangle shows no signs of slowing down. In addition to their Chicago office, HPS has offices in Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Tampa, Pensacola, Denver, San Jose, and Wheaton, Illinois. With his help, the firm is currently in the process of opening their tenth office in San Diego, and he envisions a bright future ahead.
