Robert P. Marx is a celebrated attorney based in Hilo and Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Over the course of his nearly forty-year career, Mr. Marx has helped countless personal injury victims recover damages from injuries due to third-party negligence. As the founder of The Law Offices of Robert Marx, he has been voted Best Attorney in East Hawaii by Hawaii Tribune-Herald and among the "10 Best in Client Satisfaction" by the American Institute of Personal Injury Attorneys™, among other prestigious accolades.
As he tells it, Mr. Marx decided to go into personal injury law out of a desire to try to make a difference in the world:
I started out in tax law because that was my strongest area, but I didn't like the work I was doing. I took on a few personal injury cases, and I really enjoyed them because they had elements of medicine, science, physics, and law all wrapped up into one. And in this area of the law, if you do well, the clients come out with more money instead of a big bill, so you really are the knight in shining armor. It’s a wonderful thing to be able to help somebody and make them smile at the end of the case.
Mr. Marx earned his political science degree from Oregon State University in 1971 and continued on to Lewis & Clark Law School. Before receiving his Juris Doctor in 1979, he served three terms as an elected member of the Oregon House of Representatives. During this time, he was responsible for supporting legislation in the area of nursing home care and was voted Senior Citizen Advocate of the Year by the American Association of Retired People and Retired Educators Legislative Committee.
Today, Mr. Marx uses a combination of vast legal experience, an extensive network of local resources, and a personable approach to client relations to fight for injury victims. Whether he is helping clients deal with medical specialists, filing information with their insurance, or advising them on the next steps in a case, he works day and night to support them through trying times. Mr. Marx’s noteworthy verdicts and settlements—including a $5.6 million wrongful death recovery on behalf of the family of a single mother—are a testament to his dedication to the highest standards in legal representation.
A leader in his field, Mr. Marx understands the importance of mentoring new and aspiring attorneys. When asked to provide some words of wisdom for those pursuing personal injury law, he noted:
You really have to enjoy solving intellectual puzzles. You have to learn to be alone and trust yourself, while, at the same time, constantly asking others for help. And no matter how many years of experience you have, you have to act like you don't know anything at all, because there will always be a different way to resolve a case that you didn't think was solvable. It’s also very important to be able to learn from your failures.
With almost four decades of success behind him, Mr. Marx envisions a bright future ahead. Heeding his own advice, he plans to continue to improve on his own capacities so that he can keep growing as an attorney. Outside of the office, Mr. Marx enjoys traveling and collecting various types of artwork, including several by DaVinci.
