Tre Lovell is a distinguished lawyer based in Los Angeles, California. Having achieved national prominence with more than twenty-five years of experience, Mr. Lovell is the Senior Attorney and Owner of The Lovell Firm, P.C., where he focuses his practice on business, entertainment, intellectual property, and employment law. Mr. Lovell’s industry-leading client representation has earned him recognition by numerous organizations within both the legal and business communities, including The National Law Journal’s Top 50 Litigation Trailblazers, The Los Angeles Business Journal’s Lawyer of the Year Finalist, 2016, and positions on numerous prestigious legal organizations’ lists for Top 100 and Top 1% of attorneys nationwide.
Though today Mr. Lovell is among the preeminent business and entertainment attorneys in the nation, his path to his current position was not always clear to him. As he tells it:
To be quite honest I ended up going to law school because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. My father was an attorney, and I knew I didn't want to be a doctor or go to business school. I figured if I went to law school, it would be a good foundation for whatever I ultimately wanted to do. But when I got there, I ended up enjoying the law. I started out working with a big firm for about six years before going out on my own. After starting my own practice and having the ability to take the types of cases I wanted, that's when I fell in love with the law.
Mr. Lovell earned his Juris Doctor from McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, California after receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from Pomona College. Immediately following his matriculation from law school, Mr. Lovell began practicing with mid-sized defense firm, Grace, Skocypec, Cosgrove and Schirm. After having a brief partnership with famed divorce attorney Marvin Mitchelson for about four years, Mr. Lovell then branched out on his own, founding The Lovell Firm, P.C., which has since become one of the most lauded and widely respected business and entertainment firms in the nation.
Admitted to practice in both California and Nevada, Mr. Lovell represents both individuals and corporations in Los Angeles. He has aggressively litigated numerous high-profile cases, including Daun Slagle's Hollywood defamation suit against A&E Television Networks for her portrayal in Happy Face Killer and the copyright infringement case brought against the video game publisher 3D Realms for the game Earth No More. Mr. Lovell has also successfully brought cases against Fortune 500 companies, large radio conglomerates, major internet companies, Hollywood studios and magazine publishers in a variety of entertainment, intellectual property, and business litigation matters.
Over the course of his career, Mr. Lovell has been the recipient of a multitude of prestigious accolades for his fearless, assertive representation. In 2016 he was a named finalist for Lawyer of the Year by The Los Angeles Business Journal, and two years earlier he was honored by The National Law Journal as one of the Top 50 Litigation Trailblazers in the country. For two years in a row he received the 2014-2015 Litigator Award for extraordinary litigation achievement by the Trial Lawyers Board of Regents, an award given to less that 1% of attorneys in the U.S. Perhaps the most notable recognition was his feature in Forbes Magazine for his successful litigation of the $200 million Ponzi scheme that involved over twenty (20) defendants spanning across five (5) countries, a case that no other firm would take on.
As a person of immense influence in his industry, it is extremely important for Mr. Lovell to stay up to date on prevailing trends that might affect his practice. In particular, he noted that the law has not yet caught up with the speed of information dissemination afforded by the internet, greatly complicating internet defamation cases:
Years ago, if defamation occurred in a news publication or on television, it would be isolated to that particular publication/medium where you could pinpoint the time frame and identify the appropriate perpetrator. Now, because of the internet, by the time you get around to actually challenging the speech, it has already traveled around the world to thousands of different sites, so it’s very hard to find a timely way to legally protect yourself.
In addition, because of Congressional immunity for sites that host third party content and the United States’ Supreme Court’s protection of anonymous speech, oftentimes you can’t even identify who’s responsible for the defamatory remarks without filing a lawsuit and subpoenaing the involved websites. Too many people are suffering from this type of unbridled, ferocious, and brazen action, and both state and federal law are far behind in protecting innocent victims. As a result, I think this is going be a very important area of the law to attack and change.
After more than two and a half decades dedicated to law, Mr. Lovell shows no signs of slowing down. Even more passionate today than he was at the beginning of his career, Mr. Lovell envisions a bright future ahead. Looking to the future, he intends to focus his energy on legal commentary as a means of supporting a fair fight within the industry, while continuing to provide his clients with the award-winning representation for which he has become known.
At this point in my career, I really want to do something that makes a difference and closes the gaps where the current laws fall short. I’m willing to do whatever it takes to fight for the causes I believe in.
